A&M is a case study that how you finish doesn't matter.


If you have a rough spot early in the year or mid season, that gets burned into the minds of the committee, and if you are not in the picture, you can't do anything but win an automatic bid to get in the tournament.

Whereas, if you start hot, or at least don't go cold at any point, you can fall the hell apart in the last quarter of the season and still get in.

Why? Because you got penciled in in the early thought process and forgot about. If you aren't thought about early, you can't do enough late to change it except win your way in via automatic bid.

The same can be said about seeding. Duke was penciled in as a number two seed a long time ago. They got their hat handed to them in two of their last four games. Didn't matter. They were going to stay on that two line because that was where they'd already been penciled in. How horribly they finished to get hammered in two of their last four had no impact.
